IS IT CONTRACTING WORTH IT? FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TRY

In today's challenging economic climate, organizations around the world are struggling with digital transformation. That's why more and more employers are turning to IT contractors to add technical skills in areas where they are lacking. Employers benefit from the flexibility and expertise of IT contractors, often spending less by using their services when needed.

But what are the advantages for IT contractors? This blog article explores the advantages of moving from a permanent role to contracting, helping you decide if it's the right choice for you.

5 advantages of moving into IT Contracting

    1. Being your own boss

Flexibility is a significant benefit of IT contracting. A poll on the Hays LinkedIn page of over 3,000 people highlighted flexibility as the main advantage of choosing contracting over a permanent role. IT contractors can enjoy remote working, flexible hours and a better work-life balance. They also have the freedom to choose projects according to their priorities, be it higher pay or client prestige.

Our colleague, Travis O'Rourke, has organized a webinar in which he discusses this in more detail. He also explores things to keep in mind when becoming an entrepreneur and tips on running your business.

      2. Potential for higher pay

High demand for IT contractors means potential for higher pay. Contractors often receive better rates of pay, more overtime, and potential tax benefits, while organizations benefit from specialists who help them solve problems in shorter timeframes.

How much does an IT contractor earn? This again depends on your area of expertise and seniority. For example, a Java Developer can earn on average 245 RON per hour, while a QA Manual 150 RON per hour and a Business Analyst 230 RON per hour.      3. Upskilling on different technologies

In today's rapidly evolving technology landscape, staying relevant is vital for success. With this in mind, becoming an IT entrepreneur gives you the opportunity to learn a lot in different areas - and quickly. You will have access to a range of technologies in areas that will broaden your skillset.

Contractors often need to start immediately, rather than going through a longer onboarding process. While it's true that you will be hired for your existing skills, there is still an emphasis on acquiring new knowledge and honing your skills quickly within the role.

       4. Less workplace stress

Contracting also means freedom from workplace politics and the stressors associated with a traditional career. For many, climbing the corporate ladder involves sweating performance reviews and even working overtime in hopes that your boss will notice and promote you at some point. Alternatively, you might not get along with coworkers, stakeholders or even your manager. These things can make work less enjoyable and make it seem like just another stage you have to go through in your career.

These pressures don't apply in IT contracting. When you're involved in a project, you're there to do your job to the best of your ability and to leave once the project is done. As a result, you don't have to worry about the long-term plan for advancement within an organization. Also, if you don't get along with anyone during the project, you should only tolerate this for the rest of your contract.

        5. Greater networking opportunities

Because of the number of IT contracting jobs you'll work on, you'll have more opportunities to build professional relationships and make valuable connections. Making sure you create a good impression during your contracts, you’ll find it easier to keep the door open for future openings there. Key stakeholders are also more likely to recommend you for other IT contracting roles in the future - or at least give you a good reference.
